Sharjah, UAE, 28 Jan 2019 – The Northern Emirates leg of the du Football Champions, in partnership with LaLiga, and home of the official UAE Schools and Streets Cups and UAE Girls Challenge, concluded its group stages this weekend with a surprise comeback from former champs, Hatta boys.
After being denied a place in the finals last year, Rashid Bin Saeed School Boys U16 from Hatta (former U14 Champions) have made it to the Northern Emirates knockout stage, taking place next Saturday, clearing the top of group C with 13 goals in 3 solid wins.
Players came from as far as Dibba and Hatta to play and to meet up with friends from years past. “It’s wonderful to see many players who have continuously participated in the du Football Champions over the last four years. It is a testament to the strength and uniqueness of this platform in providing talent with a pathway to professional football careers, starting with a coveted spot at the du LaLiga High Performance Centre,” said Abdulwahed Juma, EVP Brand & Corporate Communications at du.
The du Football Champions continues to be a highlight on the school calendars where boys and girls await the chance to play in the tournament year after year. One such powerhouse is National Charity that has been playing in the UAE Schools Cup since 2015.
On Saturday, in the U12 category, National Charity School netted 19 goals and conceded zero topping it’s group with a comfortable lead and securing a spot in the knockouts next weekend. Their U14 team also qualified for the knockout in Sharjah next weekend.
New comers to the football scene, Egypt Club Academy, opened its doors to players only in November. Head coach, Walid Tolba entered an U12 Boys team and an U14 Streets team. “We’re a very young academy and this is our first big tournament. We are honored to be part of the du Football Champions. Football isn’t just about winning, it’s about the experience, and the boys were very excited to participate taking part in something so big and prestigious,” said Mr. Tolba. He added “I’m thrilled that our U14 team will be back on knock out day. We will be training hard this week to prepare.”
Former Real Madrid Youth Coach and Head LaLiga Scout, David Iglesias, said, “We saw some excellent talent this week that I’m sure with dedicated training can have a real shot at a professional career. We will be inviting these players to a trial with du LaLiga HPC where we will further observe and test them.” Meanwhile, players can continue to show their skills on du Talents, the Middle East’s first digital scouting platform where they can build their online profile and take fun challenges winning prizes and the chance to be scouted.
